To be fair, the way that article was worded you could interpret it as if the woman was jaywalking. Which she wasn’t. Had she been jaywalking some of the responsibility was on her. But, she wasn’t.

Why aren’t there crosswalks? The city didn’t put this access at every intersection to discourage you from crossing the street.
Speed limit is 40. Would you cross the street or walk to the end of this four mile stretch to find a crosswalk?
You’re goddamned right I’d cross the street, and so would you. Fuck those guys for driving so fast.

I hate to be that guy, but if there was traffic I’d probably find a proper crosswalk. Drivers in my area don’t really stop for people crossing at unmarked pedestrian ramps.

Out of curiosity I just checked this on Google maps. The accident happened at the corner of Bayshore Blvd and W Knights Ave. The nearest crosswalk is at the corner of Bayshore Blvd and W Gandy Blvd, 0.7 miles away. Assuming the reason she crossed at that point is because her destination was W Knights Ave that means 0.7 miles down and 0.7 miles back. Would you really walk a literal 1.4 miles just for a crosswalk? In 90° heat? With 70% humidity?

Check out the map, and see if you would still be that guy after you find the closest proper crosswalk.

.....and pushing a baby? Fuck that. I’m crossing the street since the city they gave me access with those convenient ADA curb cuts.

That’s silly. There are zillions of pedestrian crossings that don’t have painted crosswalks (whether they should is a different story). I’d be cautious crossing the road, but this is clearly a crossing, and no one is going to walk a mile plus out of their way to use it, nor should they.
I lived near a similar intersection:
Two lane road, fairly high-speed traffic, dense traffic at rush hour, and a lot of pedestrian traffic to the bus shelter and bike path. No crosswalks, but I’m quite sure no one ever walked around instead of crossing at the intersection where people are clearly intended to cross. And this is in Texas where drivers don’t yield even if there’s a painted crosswalk.

In Toronto we do it in 90 degree heat with 100% humidity.

I jaywalk all the time literally just because I am lazy. Now, I check both ways but street racing kinda negates that.
